Honeylocust Plant Bug
Honeylocust plant bug nymphs were actively feeding on the new growth of honeylocust this week in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. This pest along with honeylocust spider mite and mimosa webwom can give a honeylocust a tattered look through most of the season.
The cultivar 'Sunburst' is especially susceptible to damage from this pest. In a recent newsletter from Dr. Dave Shetlar at Ohio State, he recommends only spraying if you have at least 6 nymphs per leaf.

Pieris Lacebug
Young Pieris or Andromeda lacebug nymphs were observed on Pieris this week in Westmoreland county. If you decide to use imidacloprid to control this pest, be sure to regularly monitor for spider mite activity throught the year. Recent research at the University of Maryland, and Washington State University have indicated that imidacloprid can reduce the population of some predatory mites and minute pirate bugs.

Pine Spittlebug

Other Insects: Ash Plant Bug
Young numphs of the ash plant bug were observed feeding on the new growth of Fraxinus pennsylvanica or Green Ash. The feeding damage from this pest causes brown spots on the newly emerging growth of ash. Often, the damage is noticed when the pest has fleed the scene of the crime and is misdiagnosed. |
Hawthorn leafminer
The adults of hawthorn leafminer were active in the northern part of Allegheny County this week. The larval stage of this pest is responsible for the brown splotches on hawthorn leaves evident later in the spring and summer.
