Pest Activity

Birch Leafminer

Small 1/4" mines resulting from feeding by the first generation of birch leafminer were observed on birch in the Sewickley area last week.

Fact Sheet

Boxwood Psyllid

The nymphal stage of boxwood psyllid are currently active and can be found inside the cupped leaves on this year's new terminal growth.

Fact Sheet

Eastern Tent Caterpillar

Tents are 6-8" wide and the eastern tent caterpillars are 3/4" - 1" long in Allegheny county at this time.

Fact Sheet

European Pine Sawfly

European pine sawfly larvae are actively feeding on Mugo, Scotch, Red, Japanese Red and Austrian Pines at this time.

Fact Sheet

Hemlock Rust Mite

Hemlock rust mite, a "cool season" mite is active at this time

Fact Sheet

Honeylocust Plant Bug

Honeylocust plant bug nymphs were actively feeding on the new growth of honeylocust this week in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. This pest along with honeylocust spider mite and mimosa webwom can give a honeylocust a tattered look through most of the season.
The cultivar 'Sunburst' is especially susceptible to damage from this pest. In a recent newsletter from Dr. Dave Shetlar at Ohio State, he recommends only spraying if you have at least 6 nymphs per leaf.

Fact Sheet

Inkberry Leafminer

Adults were observed on inkberry hollies in Westmoreland county this week.

Fact Sheet

Pieris Lacebug

Young Pieris or Andromeda lacebug nymphs were observed on Pieris this week in Westmoreland county. If you decide to use imidacloprid to control this pest, be sure to regularly monitor for spider mite activity throught the year. Recent research at the University of Maryland, and Washington State University have indicated that imidacloprid can reduce the population of some predatory mites and minute pirate bugs.

Fact Sheet

Pine Spittlebug

Pine spittlebug are active at this time, but this nuisance pest rarely warrants a pesticide application.

Fact Sheet

Southern Red Mites

Another cool season mite, the southern red mite is active at this time and will remain so until we get a few consecutive days with temperatures in the mid to upper 80's.

Fact Sheet

Other Insects: Ash Plant Bug

Young numphs of the ash plant bug were observed feeding on the new growth of Fraxinus pennsylvanica or Green Ash. The feeding damage from this pest causes brown spots on the newly emerging growth of ash. Often, the damage is noticed when the pest has fleed the scene of the crime and is misdiagnosed.

Hawthorn leafminer

The adults of hawthorn leafminer were active in the northern part of Allegheny County this week. The larval stage of this pest is responsible for the brown splotches on hawthorn leaves evident later in the spring and summer.

The next scouting report will be on May 14 .
