Pest Activity

Anthracnose

In many areas, the effects of earlier anthracnose infections on sycamore and London Plane are evident. From a distance, the tree looks sparsely foliated and closer examination reveals leaves with extensive areas of brown tissue. These leaves will soon be dropping to the ground. Since most sycamores and many London Planetrees are raised from seed, there is great genetic diversity in resistance to anthracnose. It is not uncommon to see two trees just 100 feet apart with varying degrees of anthracnose symptoms. In fact, that is the situation for the two trees pictured to the left, that are located in Way Park in Edgeworth, PA (images taken 5/25/05)

Azalea Lace Bug

Nymphs are active at this time

Fact Sheet

Bagworm

Young larvae have just started to feed on a wide variety of plants in Pittsburgh.

Fact Sheet

Eastern Tent Caterpillar

Larvae are leaving the tents and looking for places to spin cocoons.

Fact Sheet

Fourlined Plant Bug

Small red and black colored nymphs are busy feeding on a wide variety of herbaceous plants and a few woody plants (forsythia) at this time. The damage is characterized by the 1/16" circular black spots on leaves. Insecticidal soap and pyrethrins will control the young nymphs. Please check the label before using on a specific plant.

Fact Sheet

Pine Needle Scale

Female scales examined on Mugo Pines in Pittsburgh this week had active crawlers beneath the white waxy covering. The crawlers have not started to migrate, but should do so next week if the seasonal temperatures continue.

Fact Sheet

The next scouting report will be on June 3 .
