Pest Activity

Azalea Lace Bug

Nymphs are actively feeding on the undersides of azalea leaves at this time.

Bagworm

Bagworms have hatched in the city of Pittsburgh and should be emerging shortly in surrounding areas. It is best to wait two weeks after first egg hatch, allowing the majority of eggs to hatch , before applying control measures. B.T. or Bacillus thuringiensis gives excellent control when larvae are small.

The adult stage of boxwood psyllid is present on boxwoods in the city of Pittsburgh.

Adult female Calico scales are filled with pink 1st instar nymphs about to start migrating to the leaves where they feed during the summer months.

Crawlers in the city of Pittsburgh are dispersing and starting to settle.

Adults are present in the landscape at this time.

Honeylocust Plant Bug

In some areas, heavy populations of honeylocust plant bug have caused early defoliation of developing honeylocust leaves, giving the appearance that the plant has not leafed out. Later instar nymphs were present last week and adults should be out shortly.

Larvae are currently feeding in the terminals of white pine and oriental spruce at this time.

Privet rust mites are active at this time, causing the leaves of privet to look dull and off color. This is an eriophyid mite.
