Pest Activity

Boxwood Psyllid

Young nymphs of the Boxwood psyllid continue to feed inside the cupped leaves of Boxwood in Pittsburgh this week.

Eastern Tent Caterpillar

In my travels I have not seen many tents this spring. The lone eastern tent caterpillar on a cherry tree on my property is 3/8 inch long and the tent is 3 inches long.

Hemlock Rust Mite

Hemlock Rust Mite remain active in SW Pennsylvania at this time. This is the time to apply controls.

Spruce Spider Mites

A few more nymphs were observed on Wednesday, but the majority of eggs have not hatched yet in the City of Pittsburgh, but this should change with the seasonal temperatures predicted for this week.

White Vine Weevil

The adult females have started laying eggs in Pittsburgh. NOW is the time to apply insecticidal sprays to the tops of white pines for control of this pest.

OTHER PESTS

Imported Willow Leaf Beetle

The first adults were observed in Sewickley this week. This is usually a minor pest does not frequently require control measures.

Hemlock Wooly Adelgid

The shot on the left was taken in the Shadyside area of Pittsburgh this week. If there are any hemlocks on the property you are maintaining, please check them for this pest. In Allegheny County, we have confirmed cases in Fox Chapel and the Shadyside area of Pittsburgh.
