Pest Activity

Boxwood Psyllid

Boxwood psyllid remains in the nymph stage and continues to feed inside the cupped leaves of Boxwood in Pittsburgh this week. You may want to consider using one of the neonicotinoid insecticides in October or November of 2007 to prevent the cupping in 2008.

The larval stage of this pest is currently feeding on Mugo and Austrian pines at this time.

Honeylocust plant Bugs have hatched and have begun feeding on honeylocusts in the City of Pittsburgh.

The majority of eggs have hatched in the City of Pittsburgh and the nymphs are actively feeding at this time.

White Vine Weevil

The adult females have started laying eggs in Pittsburgh. It is too late to apply insecticides for this year. Physical removal of infected leaders is the only control method left for this season, and should be undertaken in late May or early June when the leaders become discolored and begin to droop

Hawthorn Leafminer

The first adults were observed on Crataegus crusgalli in Pittsburgh this week.

Hemlock Wooly Adelgid

The shot on the left was taken in the Shadyside area of Pittsburgh. If there are any hemlocks on the property you are maintaining, please check them for this pest. In Allegheny County, we have confirmed cases in Fox Chapel and the Shadyside area of Pittsburgh.
