Pest Activity -- March 8, 2002

Pest Activity > Pest Activity Archives > March 8, 2002

Welcome to the Woody Ornamental Pest Scouting Report for Western Pennsylvania for March 8, 2002, brought to you by Penn State Cooperative Extension. This message will be updated weekly with growing degree day counts and insect activity through the end of June. If you would like an email copy of this report, send your request to mcm2@psu.edu.

As of March 6, all stations report no growing degree days.

The warm weather we experienced in January and February has resulted in some early pest activity. While we have no growing degree days recorded for March, John Howalid, the new IPM Agent in Erie County reported 20 growing degree days in February in Mercer County.

Hemlock Rust Mites have started to hatched and adults are becoming active in Westmoreland County at this time.

Overwintering Cooley Spruce Gall Adelgids found this past week on Douglas-fir in Westmoreland County were beginning to form the white waxy strands they form before molting. While the adelgids should be susceptible to pesticides, please wait until the air temperatures are greater than 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

The next scouting report will be on Friday, March 15.
