Welcome to the Woody Ornamental Pest Scouting Report for Western Pennsylvania for May 10, 2002, brought to you by Penn State Cooperative Extension.This message will be updated weekly with growing degree day counts and insect activity through the end of June. Pine needle scale crawlers are active in the City of Pittsburgh and the southern parts of Westmoreland county at this time.

Fourlined plant bug nymphs were observed feeding on herbaceous perennials in Allegheny County.

Locust leafminer adults were observed in Westmoreland County this past week.

Adult native holly leafminers were observed on the leaves of Ilex opaca, American Holly in the City of Pittsburgh this week, while this pest was still in the pupal stage on hollies in the Wexford area..

Spruce spider mites are active in Allegheny County and to the south at this time.

Baldcypress rust mites continue to be active in western Pennsylvania.

Honeylocust plant bug nymphs and honeylocust spider mite adults were observed on honeylocust this past week in Westmoreland and Allegheny Counties.

Birch leafminers larvae were observed in Sewickley and the City of Pittsburgh this past week.

Boxwood psyllid nymphs continue to feed on boxwoods. The nymphs should be developing into adults very soon in the City of Pittsburgh and to the south. The feeding activity of this pest causes the cupping of the terminal leaves on boxwoods and treatment should be applied now before the nymphs become adults

Pine spittlebug nymphs can be found on white and Scotch pines at this time.

Southern red mites are active on Japanese Hollies at this time.

Eastern tent caterpillar remain active with larvae measuring 3/4" long in Allegheny County and 1" long in Westmoreland County

European pine sawfly larvae are active and 3/4inch long at this time in Westmoreland County.

Hemlock rust mites remain active on Hemlocks in Western Pennsylvania at this time.

Cooley spruce gall adelgid in Westmoreland County are covered with white waxy strands, and have begun egg laying at this time, closing the window of opportunity for control this spring.
