Welcome to the Woody Ornamental Pest Scouting Report for Western Pennsylvania for May 17, 2002, brought to you by Penn State Cooperative Extension.This message will be updated weekly with growing degree day counts and insect activity through the end of June. Elm leaf beetle larva are active in the City of Pittsburgh with 1/4' diameter mines observed this past week.

Elongated hemlock scale crawlers were also active in Pittsburgh this week.

The following insects remain active in most parts of Southwestern Pennsylvania at this time:

Pine needle scale crawlers

Fourlined plant bug nymphs

Locust leafminer adults

Spruce spider mites - heavy rainfalls continue to dislodge adults

Native holly leafminers adults have started to emerge but many are still in the pupal stage

Baldcypress rust mites

Honeylocust plant bug nymphs

Honeylocust spider mite adults

Birch leafminers larvae

Boxwood psyllid nymphs and some adults were spotted in City of Pittsburgh

Pine spittlebug nymphs

Southern red mites

Eastern tent caterpillars -1" long in Allegheny County and 11/4" long in Westmoreland County

European pine sawfly

Hemlock rust mites
